There was heartening news for millions of fans this week as Avatar made its way back to the theatres with an additional ten minute footage. When James Cameron, Director of Avatar was asked about what is the strategy behind this re-releasing of one of the biggest hits last year he said that more than half of the users are yet to see the 3-D version and they will be happy with the theatrical release again.
Avatar as the name suggests one might think there is an Indian connection. When the first look of the film was released that thought process got the momentum as the characters in the film resembled some of the Indian Mythological characters like lord Shiva. The movie is James Cameron’s next after the Oscar sweeper Titanic which was released way back in 1997. Having spent almost 14 years to conceive, visualize and making this movie has all the right to be called an epic. Now many thought what more Cameron could possibly offer, after wowing a spectacular storyline like Titanic. This time though he has set the theme based on human’s unending quest for finding new sources on energy. He even set up a imaginary alien planet named Pandora which has an abundant source of energy. But the non human conditions compel the earthlings to create their alter egos or in other words the Avatars. We have seen the same points in earlier films like the Island but Avatar slips into an altogether different fantasy genre. Taking Cameron’s words this film is both epic and emotional.
Avatar’s technology is a miles ahead of any other film’s wizardry. It uses a new piece of technology called the performance capture which blots up the expression in an Actor’s body. For this the Actor’s have to wear a body suit with lots of marking on it. The special performance capture camera is used for this innovative technology. So even if we see the animated versions of the avatars the emotions and the body movement is that of real actors. James Cameron himself admitted he had no idea how to do it in the beginning and only when he found the correct financiers to back this crazy project he decides to go through it. He along with photographer Vince Pace developed some unique cameras. Cameron also has made unique languages and mannerisms for the Pandora natives and given them emotions too. It has romance, revenge, angst, war and what not.
The primary character of Jake sully has been portrayed by Sam Worthington. Jake is a handicapped ex-marine officer who is enlisted in a mission to Pandora where he must work as a spy among the Na’vis: the residents of Pandora. In his new found avatar Jakes could walk again and moreover he fells in love with the Pandora princess Neitri (played by Zoe Saldana) and turns back against the mission to help the Na’vis. What follows is the usual fight for freedom and though the story finds familiar the whole back drop is breath taking.
With a whooping budget of $240 million this film can be truly called a galactic venture. Avatar released in India in 3D and 2D theatres to packed responses. The newer version though is released only in selected 3D screens. With talks of its sequel going around this film will continue to mesmerize the audience with its charm and technology worldwide
