I have often seen my parents saying disappointingly that they have lots of friends who are long lost. Well I say we are lucky in that matter. Social Networks are probably the most effective medium of communication in this present generation. It is the most powerful medium as well where we can share and express our thoughts instantly to all our friends and colleagues. We can also find our old college and school buddies with whom we had no contact with for years through this medium. Out of all Social networking sites Facebook stands out.
This website was launched in 2004 and is operated by Facebook inc. With more than five hundred million users under their kitty this site is certainly to remain on top for some time now. The name Facebook is kept in memory of the books given to the students before an academic year in the United States. Facebook was founded by a group of Harvard students, Mark Zuckerberg, Chris Hughes, Eduardo Saverin and Dustin Moskovitz.
Anybody over the age of 13 can be a member of Facebook. All one have to do is to go to the site and register their details. Once you are registered you will be directed to your Profile page where you can make further additions. There you can search for your friends and give them friend requests. Similarly you can also accept incoming friend requests as well. Now you can share your thoughts, pictures, videos and lot more with your friends. Users can also start organizing a friend’s network through Facebook. Facebook is now rated the most preferable social network in the world and is also certainly the most used.
Though Facebook was initially targeted only for Harvard students the popularity of the software spread across all the University of the United States. The domain Facebook.com was finally purchased in 2005. In 2007 software giant Microsoft purchased a small stake in the Facebook and had the rights for international advertisements in the site. The site though has not been far from controversies. It has been banned from various Islamic countries for publishing a cartoon hurting their religious sentiments. It has been also banned in China and Vietnam. Many private employers have also firewalled Facebook from their office since most of the employees are addicted to the site. The privacy criteria of Facebook have also come under scrutiny since it has a clause that allows the site to publish user’s private data anywhere. Facebook has already settled a law suit regarding their source code.
The “wall” of the users refers to their space where friends can post messages and attachments. The poke term refers to the users virtually poking each other through the site. Users can also display their relationship status, if they his or her partner is in Facebook itself they can mention it as well. Facebook also works along sites like photobucket and youtube. Users can tag their friends in photos. Facebook also contain an instant messenger with which we can chat online. This site also contains great game such as Farmville and Mafia wars where we can play online along with our friends. Many good causes can be initiated through the site. Nowadays Facebook is also available on mobile with the help of which we can stay connect with our friends any time of the day. The site has also an inspiration for many books and movies as well. We can say without doubt this site has changed the face of social networking for ever.
