For last few months the word “tweet” has been ringing in my ears for more than once. Finally last month I decided to join the countless people who are in the twitter band wagon. My decision to join this micro blogging site was fueled by the inclusion of a certain Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar in this site. Honestly I did not like twitter on the first place, I was used to the long text comfort of orkut and Facebook but here I had to include everything under 140 words. Well I strongly disagree with the people who say first impression is the best impression; I am in love with this site now. Well it has certain limitations but is well worth the time I spend on it. The concept of not having any friends but only following and followers are brilliant.
Twitter is owned by Twitter Inc. with its headquarters at San Francisco, California. Twitter is the creation of Jack Dorsey who made this short messaging web service in 2006. The concept of twitter is simple, to register and follow. The users will have to undergo a registration process filling all the required details. Once that process is completed the users can search for celebrities and friends and can follow their tweets. User’s can themselves post tweets or messages in less than 140 words. If a person is following you he will be updated with the message. Similarly you can see the tweets of persons you follow at your home page. You can either reply to the tweet or re-tweet the message. It is as simple as that.
Many Celebrities in India has become the twitter people or in common words the “tweeple”. The most notable Indian on that list is as I said earlier Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar who broke all the records when he joined this site three months ago. Sashi Tharoor, former minister of state and a member of parliament is the most followed Indian on twitter; He has currently over seven lakh followers. But the same twitter has landed Tharoor in trouble more than once. Now though he seemed to have gauged the Indian politics and is staying from any further controversies. Bollywood has the most number of representations. The Shehensha of bollywood Amitabh Bachchan is a prominent twitterite and tweets regularly. All the three Khan’s Aamir, Shahrukh and Salman are on twitter. Also many actresses such as priyanka chopra, deepika padukone, priety zinta etc, are among the tweeples. There is also lot of international celebrities like Rihanna also in the twitter list. Sachin recently launched a charity drive with the help of twitter to help under privileged children and the response he got for it was outstanding Twitter has more than 100 million users worldwide, The biggest impact it has the common man will feel a lot closer to his idols, for instance I was hugely excited when Virender Sehwag replied to one of my tweets earlier last month. Twitter also recorded a 1500 % increase of users in early this year. Users can post topics of similar genre under the hash tags. A sign “@” is given as prefixes to username for every account for e.g. if your username is abc then your twitter account will be @abc. There also lot of subsidiaries for twitter. The most notable is twitpic with which we can upload photos into twitter. Bit.ly, goo.gl and tr.im are used as URL shortening services. There are hitches though, twitter’s server crashes often when the traffic load increases. Also celebrities can get foul messages in their home page. Twitter is also not free from hacking personals. But in spite of all this it is a brilliant concept and everyone should check it. Happy Tweeting!!!
